British Idioms

This will be an evolving post, but it's one I wanted to write because I keep hearing great British idioms that Americans just don't seem to use. There are two that I can think of right now, but I'll come back to this post to add more as I remember them.

  1. For my sins - a semi-joking expression indicating that something you are doing or have done is some kind of punishment. (i.e., "Laura, didn't you go to Rice for graduate school?" "For my sins...")
  2. And Queen Anne is dead - means that someone has just told you old news or stated the obvious. Apparently when Queen Anne died, the news was hushed up for awhile, but it leaked out. Thus, when it was officially made public, it was already old news.
